The Group of Ministers (GoM) has unanimously decided to impose 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on casino, race course and online gaming services. The structure on which GST will be levied has also been approved.
The increase in taxation would have catastrophic impact on the industry. The association of online skill-based gaming platforms has made representation before the authorities for retaining the current level of GST. Online games of skills include e-sports, fantasy games, rummy and poker or chess. The industry has 400 players employing about 45,000 people. GST is currently charged on platform fee, termed as Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR).
