Online gambling call centre busted with arrest of 4 suspects
KUCHING (June 26): An online gambling call centre which is estimated to make around RM20,000 a day was shuttered by the district police at 10.45am yesterday.
Kuching District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said four suspects comprising three women and a man who worked as operators at the centre were also arrested.
“The raid was carried out at a luxury house in Airport Road, which was turned into an online gambling call centre,” said Ahsmon in a statement yesterday.
The raid was carried out based on police intelligence and surveillance.
The modus operandi of the call centre, he said, was to promote gambling websites on Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and WeChat.
“The suspects work 24-hour on a 12-hour shift,” said Ahsmon, adding the call centre is believed to have started operations early this year.
He said the suspects between 20 and 35 years-old were also renting the house for RM2,000 a month.
Seized by police during the raid were seven computers, 22 handphones and other devices used to run the centre.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
Police will also be applying for a remand order against all the suspects for further investigation today.
