Online casinos are now legal in a number of states, from Connecticut and Delaware to Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Rhode Island.

Here’s a look at the current landscape in US states that have legalized online casinos.

New online casinos in Connecticut

Legal online casino gambling launched in Connecticut in October 2021, and two online casinos are now operating in the state.

For context, a pair of massive tribal casinos have defined Connecticut gambling since the 1980s: Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino. The tribes behind these casinos secured exclusive rights to online casino gaming in Connecticut. That's why there are only two online casinos in the state and no plans to launch any new online casinos.

The two Connecticut online casinos are Mohegan Sun Casino, a joint venture with FanDuel Casino carrying the Mohegan Tribe’s Mohegan Sun brand, and DraftKings Casino, which operates in partnership with Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

New online casinos in Delaware

The Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act became law in 2012, allowing the state lottery to offer online casino gaming. There are three online casinos in Delaware, run in partnership with the lottery and the state's three racino properties: Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Raceway.

These three online casinos function as a single-operator system via three individually branded online casino sites carrying the racino names. The sites initially launched in partnership with Scientific Games and 888. After a decade, the contract with Scientific Games and 888 expired. In 2023, the Delaware Lottery selected Rush Street Interactive, the company behind the BetRivers Sportsbook & Casino brand, as its new online gaming partner.

It's a five-year deal, and although no new online casinos are coming to Delaware, the Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Raceway online casinos should be getting a new BetRivers-style facelift.

New online casinos in Michigan

Michigan legalized online casinos in December 2019, passing the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, which authorized the issuance of up to 15 online casino licenses via tribal and commercial casinos in the state. The first eight legal online casinos launched in January 2021. There are now 15 online casinos in Michigan, which means all 15 licenses are in use.

The newest Michigan online casino is Hollywood Casino Online, which launched in November 2023. It replaced Barstool Casino as a part of a recent Penn-ESPN deal. SI Casino also launched in February 2023, taking over the TwinSpires license. Furthermore, in 2023, Wynn Resorts announced plans to close its online sports betting and iGaming platform in several states and conduct reviews in others, including Michigan. If any new online casino comes to Michigan, it's likely to replace WynnBET and its licensing partnership with Kewadin Casinos.

New online casinos in New Jersey

New Jersey legalized online casinos in February 2013, allowing each Atlantic City casino to launch several online casino skins operating as independent online casinos. The first legal online casinos took part in a synchronized launch on Nov. 21, 2013. There are now 30 online casinos in New Jersey, operating under one of eight licenses issued to Atlantic City casinos.

Caesars Palace Online Casino is the newest online casino to launch in New Jersey, going online in the summer of 2023. New online casinos expected to launch in New Jersey soon may include Fanatics Online Casino (replacing PointsBet) and ESPN Online Casino (replacing Barstool).

New online casinos in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania legalized online gambling in 2017, and the first legal online casinos launched in 2019. There are now 20 online casinos in Pennsylvania, operating under licenses issued to Pennsylvania casinos and other authorized online gambling entities.

Golden Nugget PA launched in August 2023, making it the newest Pennsylvania online casino. That title previously belonged to Bally PA, which launched in Pennsylvania in June 2023. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has also approved the launch of Fanatics Casino (which purchased PointsBet) and Bet365 (approved independent license.) Plus, Mr. Vegas Casino should launch soon in partnership with Caesars Entertainment, which already runs Caesars Palace Online Casino in the state.

New online casinos in West Virginia

The West Virginia Legislature approved legal online casino gaming in the form of the West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act in 2019. The new law tasked the West Virginia Lottery with regulating online casinos, creating rules, and managing the industry. The first legal online casino in the state, DraftKings Casino, launched in July 2020. BetMGM Casino came a month later, and BetRivers, FanDuel, Caesars, and Golden Nugget followed in 2021. PointsBet launched in 2022.

WynnBET has come and gone, while Caesars Palace Online Casino is the newest West Virginia online casino after its August 2023 launch. Fanatics Casino may soon replace it after its recent purchase of PointsBet.

New online casinos in Rhode Island

Rhode Island became the seventh state to launch online casinos in March 2024. Bally's Casino is the only online casino available to state residents. Bally’s has operated two retail casinos in Rhode Island – Bally's Twin River Lincoln and Bally's Tiverton – on behalf of the Rhode Island Lottery.
