The Netherlands gaming authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has revealed that it issued three warnings to gambling providers for breaching new advertising regulations which came into force on July 1st 2023.

According to the statement, the online gambling operators had placed advertisements in public places such as billboards and bus shelters. This is now prohibited as all forms of untargeted advertising for online gambling products and services are no longer allowed.

Despite being in breach of the new regulations, the KSA opted not to impose financial penalties on the gambling providers in question and to instead issue warnings. The KSA was satisfied with the companies’ explanations and their efforts to remove the ads immediately once informed of the breaches.

The ban on untargeted advertising for online gambling operators first came into effect on July 1st 2023. The ban is intended to limit exposure to minors or vulnerable groups such as problem gamblers. This means that any ads that can be viewed by the general public are no longer permitted. This includes radio, TV, and billboards in public spaces. Advertising in private places that can be accessed by the general public such as arcades, cinemas, and cafes is also prohibited.
