Netherlands Online Slots Ban on the Horizon
In April, the Dutch House of Representatives approved a ban on “high-risk” online gambling activities, such as slots. The House also endorsed a ban on targeted online gambling advertisements.
The proposals were introduced by Socialist Party MP Michiel van Nispen. Additional measures, including financial risk assessments and mandatory identification for gamblers, received approval as well.
Van Nispen argued that the uncontrollable nature of outcomes in online slots is a primary cause of problem gambling. The proposal to ban these slots was passed with majority vote of 79.
Although the House has voted, the decision to implement these measures now rests with Franc Weerwind, the Netherlands’ Minister for Legal Protection.
