Netflix Licenses First Slot Machine With ‘Squid Game’

“Netflix and chill” may soon be taking on a different meaning. The company recently announced its first gambling licensing deal to bring one of the streaming service’s most popular titles to a slot machine.
The Squid Game slot is now expected to hit casino floors beginning in 2024 as part of a deal with gaming giant Light & Wonder. The slot will debut at the Global Gaming Expo this week in Las Vegas, giving guests a chance to check out the slot based on the immensely popular television series.
Building On A Massive Hit
Squid Game may be the perfect option for Netflix to get into the slot business. The show became the company’s most-watched show or film ever after debuting in 2021 with 1.6 billion hours viewed. That inspired a reality show version of the game debuting in November and an upcoming second season of the original series.
Light & Wonder is now hoping to capture some of that audience on the casino floor. The slot features popular games from the show including: Red Light, Green Light; Tug of War; and The Glass Tile. The game’s top prize is set at $200,000 to $400,000.
The company is going big for the debut – in physical size that is. Squid Game will utilize Light & Wonder’s Horizon large-screen cabinet. This includes a 75-inch screen with 600,000 individual micro-LED pixels that takes the display area to 90 inches. The cabinet also features integrated lighting, a 27-inch touch screen, mobile charger, and more. Light & Wonder is also planning a digital version of the game as well.

The licensing of movies, television shows, game shows, rock bands, and other pop culture phenomenons have become more popular in the slots machine industry over the last decade. Casino visitors can spin some reels on games featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Wheel of Fortune, James Bond, the Ghostbusters, and numerous others.
Squid Game now becomes the latest entry into this pop culture slot environment. Players giving the game a few spins won’t quite face the same fate as the losing contestants on the original Squid Game, but may simply lose a few bucks instead.
