Miccosukee Tribe Sues Insurance Company for $5M Swindled in a Casino Fraud
Miccosukee Tribe of Florida launched a legal proceeding against Great American Insurance Company. The tribe is seeking to recoup $5.3 million that was swindled in an elaborate embezzlement scheme at its Miccosukete Casino & Resort in Miami-Dade County. Four employees, three spouses and a girlfriend were convicted of theft, computer fraud and money laundering.
Miccosukee Tribe Sues Insurance Company for $5M Swindled in a Casino Fraud. In 2015, an anonymous tipster told casino officials about the fraudulent scheme. The scam operated between January 2011 and May 2015. Lester Lavin was the mastermind of the scam. He was working at the casino in 2003 and in 2009, he was promoted to video supervisor. Lvin and two other people stole money from the Casino. In July 2019, a federal Grand Jury issued an indictment of 63 counts and charged eight individuals with participating in the fraud.
The tribe submitted a $5.3 million claim to Great American Insurance Company in August 2019. The insurer denied the claim in April 2021. GreatAmerican Insurance Co. has not responded yet in court to the tribe's lawsuit. The tribe did not inform the insurer about the loss when it was discovered in May 2015.
