Meghalaya set to deny its citizens access to freshly legalized gambling and betting
Meghalaya is the third state in India's northeast to legalise gambling and betting. The focus of the state government is to use gambling to boost tourism, raise tax revenues and create new job opportunities. The state became the first to allow both paper and online lottery in the whole country. It is also one of first states to accept participants from other states where lottery is not banned.
Opposition to legalisation of gambling and betting voiced. Voice of the People and Meghalaya United Christian Forum (MUCF) are concerned about the negative impact on the young and vulnerable citizens of Meghanahia. MUCf Secretary Synsharlang Kharshiing questions whether people are willing to pay the price.
Meghalaya is set to ban its citizens from newly legalized gambling and betting. The government will issue licenses to operate games of skill and chance, both online and offline, but only for tourists and visitors to the state. Goa banned locals from the land- and water-based casinos in August 2012, 8 years after the ban was first notified. Locals still have the legal option to bet on Shillong Teer, a lottery based on the sport of archery.
