Louisiana casinos bouncing back, but attendance still low

Louisiana’s casinos, video gaming devices and racetrack slot machines saw revenues jump more than 18% for the 2020-21 fiscal year, though the number of customers is down sharply, according to The Daily Advertiser. 

For the year running from July 2020 through June 2021, the state’s gaming establishments have reported more than $2.9 billion in revenue, according to data from the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. Revenue was up about $450 million compared to the previous fiscal year, running from July 2019 through June 2020, when the state had strict protocols in place for casinos as COVID-19 raged across the state.

But the number of customers admitted to gaming establishments has dropped considerably from the 2019-20 year. For the 2019-20 period, casinos and racetrack slot machines had around 20.9 million customers, but that number dropped more than 18% for the 2020-21 year, even as revenues recovered.

Revenues for the state’s 15 riverboat casinos, including the three in Baton Rouge, increased by $163.6 million, or 11.2%, on the year, rising from about $1.5 billion to more than $1.6 billion. Read the full story.
