Las Vegas police officer convicted of casino robberies to be sentenced
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The former Las Vegas police officer convicted of robbing three casinos is set to receive his prison sentence.
is scheduled to appear for a sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Andrew Gordon in a Las Vegas federal courtroom on Tuesday.
Prosecutors are seeking about 20 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, while Rogers' attorney is asking for leniency, citing his career as a law enforcement officer.
"While many of his peers chose career paths and lifestyles that served only themselves, [Rogers] opted for service in one of the most dangerous professions dedicated to protecting our society," his attorney Richard Pocker wrote in a sentencing memo.
back in July on all counts of stealing nearly $165,000 during a trio of casino heists, including one where he was armed with a department-issued weapon that was loaded.
According to , a man ran to the employee side of the sportsbook counter at the Rio last year and pushed one worker to the ground.
He threatened to shoot two employees as he grabbed cash from the drawer and placed it into a bag, the report states. As he was doing this, an employee pulled robbery alarms to alert security, causing the man to jump over the counter and run away. Security officers chased after the man as he ran outside the west doors, and one officer managed to tackle him in the driveway near the parking garage.
Investigators checked the serial number on the gun recovered at the scene. They learned it belonged to LVMPD and was checked out to Rogers, according to an FBI complaint.
Prosecutors identified Rogers as a suspect in two other robberies reported at Aliante and Red Rock Casino. Rogers' brother, Josiah Rogers, saying the two of them rehearsed one of the robberies.
