Just a year after the famous Las Vegas Strip closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its famous casinos have resurfaced with a record summer thanks to a notable winning streak.

Nevada posted a record $ 1.36 billion last month thanks to gamblers flooding the city again after spending months confined with few options for spending their money.

“We weren’t anticipating these numbers,” said Michael Lawton, an analyst with the Nevada Gaming Control Commission.

“In Nevada, a billion dollar gambling win is kind of a barometer, and we’ve logged billions of dollars in gambling for five months in a row.”

July was like a “perfect storm”, thanks to great events including the fight of the Irish wrestler Conor McGregor, a concert of the American country singer Garth Brooks and the return of musical shows like those of Usher and Bruno Mars to the casinos. .

The month also had five weekends, including a national holiday.

But the winning streak and crowds on the Las Vegas Strip point to a renewed confidence in how safe it is to huddle at slots and roulette tables, as the delta variant spreads and indoor mask wearing is re-imposed. .

“People who come to Las Vegas don’t seem very concerned,” said a bartender who works on the Strip, which with its spectacular casinos has become one of the most famous avenues in the world.

“They don’t seem worried about getting sick. I think if they were paranoid about it, they wouldn’t travel, they would stay home,” said the young man who preferred not to be identified.
