Kominfo Blocks Nearly Half A Million Online Gambling Contents on Various Platforms
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Communication and Information (Kominfo), Budi Arie Setiadi, underlined that the government will continue to take efforts to eradicate online gambling. One of them is blocking access or content related to such illegal activity.
“From July 18 to October 18, 2023, we have terminated access to 425,506 gambling contents,” Budi Arie said in a press conference at the Ministry’s Office, Central Jakarta, on Friday, October 20, 2023.
The content, he outlined, came from diverse sources, including websites or IP addresses (237,096 contents), file sharing (17,235 contents), and social media platforms (171,175 contents).
Budi Arie also said the ministry had asked internet service providers (ISP) and mobile operators to continue intensifying efforts to combat online gambling. One of them is ensuring the accuracy of the system synchronization on the site's database containing gambling content. “And immediately follow up on the request for access termination that we filed,” he added.
According to him, Kominfo will keep implementing anti-gambling measures firmly and seriously. He also said he would not hesitate to issue warnings and impose heavy sanctions on platforms that are not serious about blocking gambling content.
However, he admitted that the ministry could not completely wash it out despite its serious efforts. Thus, the ministry supported the police's determination to arrest perpetrators, influencers, or other parties facilitating such activities.
“This is not even enough, the active role of the community against online gambling is highly necessary,” Budi Arie said, likening the illegal activities to a societal disease.
