Jhapa police arrest 4 for operating online gambling at an education consultancy
Police in the Jhapa district of eastern Nepal have arrested four persons on the charge of operating online gambling in the name of an education consultancy.
The key suspect has been identified as Sat Prakash Sah (25), a resident of Damak municipality-8 of the district, who runs the Padma International Consultancy.
Police had looked into his account details after they received complaints that he defrauded people. After one bank account of him showed monthly transactions worth Rs 8 million, the investigators concluded it was very unnatural in comparison to his profession.
Following that, the Damak Area Police Office and Province 1 Police Office’s Regional Investigation Team launched a joint investigation.
“We had suspected that he was into online fraud, but more seriously, he would operate online gambling,” DSP Dilip Giri says, adding he would use eSewa to facilitate the transactions.
Other suspects are Raju Shrestha of Damak-7, Arun Karki of Kamal-2, and Raju Limbu of Damak-8. Whereas Shrestha is also a consultancy operator, Karki runs a photo studio in Damak. Limbu owns a fitness training centre aimed at foreign military aspirants.
Sat Prakash Sah has reportedly confessed to the police that he had been doing fraudulent activities for one and a half months.
“Further investigation is underway,” DSP Giri says.
