When you think of what words or things are synonymous with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), you may think of the UFC, the fighters, combat sports or even Conor McGregor given how popular he is. Rarely does one think of ‘casino’ with MMA.

Impact of MMA on Casinos

However, if one stops to think about how the rise of MMA as a sport has had an influence on culture and business, then you may start to realize how much of an impact MMA has had on casino businesses.

If you’re a big fan of MMA, think of all the countless MMA events, particularly UFC, you’ve watched live or on the television and realize that a lot of the big ones like UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor; took place at casinos or close to them.

Imagine all those people packed out at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at one of those big McGregor PPV cards where legions of Irish fans travelled far and beyond to watch their hometown boy fight. And you know for a fact that a lot of them went to a casino at some point during fight week. They are in Las Vegas, after all, the capital of casinos some may say. When in Rome, you have to undergo the Las Vegas experience at some point to try your luck at some gambling, a bit of poker to make some extra dough.

All in all, given how popular MMA is worldwide with many different nationalities of fighters and champions, the sport has boosted casino revenues not just in Vegas but around the world.

Furthermore, MMA has brought a lot of the generally younger demographic into casinos. MMA is still a fairly young sport that has only really been around for about 30 years compared to most other sports such as boxing which has been around since the 19 century. So naturally, the fan demographics tend to be on the young side most likely millennials (1981-1996) and Gen Z (1997-2015). If you think of boxing, whilst there is most definitely a passionate, young fanbase, you will also find a large chunk of older guys probably in their 50s who watched in awe of Mike Tyson in his prime, given boxing’s rich history. This is all generally speaking of course.

On the whole, MMA attracts a lot of the younger audiences to casinos who seem less in tune with the different types of gambling games casinos have to offer. Having a big UFC PPV event brings in those young fans into the vicinity of those casino resorts whereas before they may have not had any interest whatsoever.

To put it simply, whilst it may be difficult to measure just how successful MMA has been on casinos on a grand scale, it has definitely been a positive impact. Bringing in a young demographic through massive PPV events has certainly brought hope to casino business owners who arguably have lost the interest of younger audiences. Slot machines and even popular games like blackjack seem to be distant from the younger generation. However, MMA is bringing in new fans to casinos in vast numbers and that can only be seen as something positive.
