Iconic Sahara hotel-casino celebrates 70 years on Las Vegas Strip
The Sahara hotel-casino in Las Vegas celebrates its 70th anniversary this month. The hotel has been purchased, rebranded and transformed twice in the last 15 years. Its president is Paul Hobson.
Sahara is 70 years old and has been a touchstone for many families growing up in Las Vegas. The last major investment was in the late 1980s, when the gravity of the Strip was shifting south. Now, post-SLS, the property has remained the same.
The Rat Pack were very accessible when they were at Sahara. The original Magic Mike movie was directed by Steven Soderbergh. Steven and Channing Tatum are making a new MagicMike movie. Ocean's 11 was remade at the Sahara and it has a thread on the property.
The Beatles were booked to perform at the Sahara, but the venue couldn't accommodate the number of people who wanted to see them. The show was held at Convention Center instead. The slot machines were taken to their suite, so they could goof around and play on them, because they couldn’t go to the casino.
