A LUCKY couple who scooped £1.6million on the lottery celebrated their huge win with a bucket of KFC.

Bruce Carter and Emiliana Kaftan kicked off 2023 with a bang after hitting the jackpot.

The couple, from Quesnel in Canada, decided to stop and pick up a ticket for the January 4 draw on a whim as they were driving.

Carter said: "I thought, 'It’s a new year, why not purchase a ticket?'

"And of course, we had to buy it from her favourite place."

And Emiliana's lucky spot turned out to be the right decision.

The morning after the draw, Bruce went online and found out someone from Quesnel had scooped the jackpot in the BC/49 draw.

He said: "I had my ticket beside the computer and started comparing my numbers to the winning ones and said, ‘Okay, something’s goofy here because these numbers are the same!'"

Bruce scanned the ticket on the lottery app to confirm the huge win before calling Emiliana over to share the life-changing news.

“My heart was beating, and I started shaking with excitement,” Emiliana said.

Bruce added: "She signed the ticket so fast and started hopping around.

"At one point, I asked her to pinch me to make sure I wasn’t dreaming."

The couple have also revealed what they plan to do with the cash.

They said they were celebrating their jackpot over a KFC with Bruce's mum.

Emiliana and Bruce also plan to share some of the winnings with their family and go on a big fishing trip.

It comes after a woman from North Carolina won two jackpots in the space of a month after sticking to the same tactic.

Kenya Sloan, 40, won a total of £2million pounds after buying scratchcards instead of playing the lottery.

The McDonald's manager scooped £826,000 on a Carolina Jackpot scratchcard in August - her first time playing the game.

And just a month later she won again, bagging £1.6million on a Diamond Dazzler scratchcard by sticking to the same tactic.

Kenya is planning to use the cash to set herself up in the restaurant business as well as buy a plot of land to build a house.

Another mystery lottery winner also scooped nearly £13million after purchasing his ticket in the town of Luck, in Wisconsin.

Officials say the jackpot is the largest awarded lump sum in Wisconsin in the US since 2015.
