LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Ninth Island has minted a new millionaire.
A guest from Hawaii hit a jackpot of more than $1.5 million while visiting California Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday, according to Boyd Gaming.
The guest, who wished to remain anonymous, was playing an IGT Wheel of Fortune slot machine while in town to celebrate their son's 21st birthday.
Just before 4 a.m., the guest activated the bonus wheel with 7s across the payline on a $5 wager, a Boyd spokesperson said in a news release.
The wheel landed on the progressive jackpot worth $1,569,632.91.
"The winner attributed his tremendous luck to a red envelope he carried in his pocket during his visit, symbolizing good luck, prosperity and happiness," the release states.
Las Vegas has been dubbed the Ninth Island because of its popularity with Hawaii residents, and the California in particular is held in high renown.
