Lincoln residents are one step closer to being able to play games of chance and wager on sports. Ground was broken Tuesday morning on the WarHorse Casino at Lincoln Race Course.

Lance Morgan is president and CEO of Ho-Chunk, Inc, the parent company of the casino, and says they expect to invest $300 million in the project.  “We’re going to create 900 jobs.  Combined we’re going to add $100 million in tax revenue through gaming to the state for property tax relief.”

When the project is completed in 18 months there will be more than 1,100 slot machines, 100 gaming tables, sportsbook and both live and simulcast horse racing.  This fall a temporary facility will open and will feature 440 slot machines.

The project will also also include a 200 room hotel and several new dining options, including a high end steak house.

“Nebraskans won’t have to wait much longer for the chance to play their favorite slots,” Morgan says.  “Nebraskans have been asking us for months when the casino will open, so we want to give them the opportunity to play as soon as we can.”

Two other WarHorse casinos are being built Omaha and South Sioux City.
