First State-Licensed Casino in Nebraska Opens Its Doors
The WarHorse Casino Lincoln opened its doors on Saturday morning. More than 100 people queued outside the property to await the opening. Hundreds more people arrived throughout the day. The casino is a collaboration between the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
The WarHorse Casino Lincoln is a temporary gambling facility, holding about 850 people and containing approximately 400 slot machines. A permanent casino is expected to open in the same location in about 18 months. It will cost in region of $200m and feature 1,300 gaming machines, table games, a sportsbook, as well as a hotel, event space, and numerous restaurants. Developers expect to also open a permanent Warhorse casino in Omaha, Nebraska in 2023.
Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission approved WarHorse Casino's license on Friday. The commission's vote was unanimous. Nebraskans voted in favor of allowing casinos at the six licensed horse racing tracks in the state in May 2012. A legislative bill received final approval in 2022.
