Gambling in Canada vs the US
Gambling around the world is subject to different laws and legislation. Some of the most popular land-based gambling destinations, like Macau and the US, have some of moststringent laws pertaining to gambling and online gambling. Other main markets like Europe, UK and Canada have more relaxed laws regulating the market.
Gambling was illegal in the US in early 20th century. In the 1970s, the Canadian Criminal Code was reformed and provinces were able to set their own legislation with regards to gambling. The Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was brought in by George Bush. It made it illegal for any operator to accept payment for gambling services over the internet. Canada has more choice of online gambling options. In 2018, PASPA 1992 was ruled unconstitutional and states are looking to open up their markets to sports betting. North Carolina will open its market in March 2021. New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware were among the first states to legalise sports gambling in 2010.
Both the US and Canada have different attitudes to gambling. The US has struggled with the federal versus state legislation. Canada is looking to legislate in a meaningful way that will protect operators and players.
