Gambling chief Yorgen Fenech ‘paid hitmen to murder Daphne Caruana Galizia’

A gambling firm boss has been charged over the murder of the investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who exposed corruption in Malta’s political establishment.

In an indictment presented to a court yeterday, prosecutors said that Yorgen Fenech, 39, whose business activities had been exposed in Caruana Galizia’s articles, paid two criminals, George and Alfred Degiorgio, €150,000 to carry out the murder. They said the money was passed via a taxi driver, Melvin Theuma, who turned state’s evidence in exchange for a pardon.

Caruana Galizia, 53, was killed by a car bomb in 2017. Her murder sent shock waves through Maltese society and the European Union, whose officials were concerned that Malta was becoming a rogue state.
