A Cass County man may not have won the Powerball jackpot, but his $1 million Powerball prize was enough to take the day off work to celebrate!

Tori Simpson, of Marcellus, matched the five white balls in the March 16 drawing to win the big prize: 12-23-44-57-61. He bought his winning ticket online at MichiganLottery.com. Marcellus is about 30 miles southwest of Kalamazoo.

“I logged into the app before heading to work the morning after the drawing to see if maybe I won the jackpot and didn’t have to work anymore,” joked Simpson. “It may not have been the jackpot, but it was quite shocking when I logged into my account and saw $1 million pending. Needless to say, I didn’t end up going into work that day!”

“I’d like to congratulate Tori Simpson on his big win!” said Lottery Commissioner, Suzanna Shkreli. “His prize is one of two $1 million prizes won during the current Powerball jackpot run. These huge Powerball jackpots are exciting for players and great for Michigan schools, which received a fifth consecutive contribution of more than $1 billion from the Lottery in fiscal year 2023.”

“Winning a $1 million prize means living comfortably and having a nice financial cushion for me and my family,” said Simpson.

Simpson, 55, visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize. With his winnings, he plans to build a new home and save for retirement.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online atMichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
