Australian Woman Steals AU$940,000 for Gambling Habit
Rachel Naomi Perri, 49, has been charged with stealing AU$940,000 from her employer and using the funds for gambling purposes. She worked as a Tasmanian Veterinary Hospital account manager from 2016 until 2019. Her employer discovered anomalies in her bank transactions. Peri spent all of the stolen money on a poker app called Heart of Vegas.
Perri stole AU$940,221 (US$678,750) from the hospital over a period of 3 years and 4 months. She transferred the money out of the bank account and into various credit cards, bank accounts and personal loans in her own name. Perri was caught after she was playing on the Heart of Vegas app.
Perri has a gambling addiction. She was convicted in the 1990s for stealing AU$7,000 from her employer. Perri started gambling again in 2008/2009 and accumulated a huge debt. In 2014 she started playing Heart of Vegas and took out numerous loans and credit cards. Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Jordan diagnosed Peri with a severe gambling disorder.
Gambling apps such as Heart of Vegas are a hot topic in many jurisdictions. Google and Apple are facing numerous class-action lawsuits as a result of these types of social casino apps.
