Atlantic City Casino Workers Urge Vice President for Support on Smoking Ban
The Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE) are using the visit of the US vice president in Atlantic City to urge support of new regulations that will ban smoking in casinos.
Smoking in casinos is a health hazard for employees. Almost half of casino workers are people of color. Pregnant women are at risk. Kamala Harris is in Atlantic City to address the National Convention and discuss reproductive health rights with New Jersey lawmakers. CEASE wants her to support a ban on indoor smoking in the casinos.
In 2008, the New Jersey's casinos were allowed to permit indoor smoking in 25% of their venues. This exemption was revoked in 2008 due to the economic crisis and financial challenges. In April this year, Atlantic City casino employees organized demonstrations in support of legislation proposing to ban smoking.
