After 25 years, East Chicago casino looks back on changes, growth, giving back
Showboat Mardi Gras Casino opened in East Chicago on April 18, 1997. It raked in $160.9 million in adjusted gross gaming receipts in its first year. Showboat Marina Casino Partnership invested $195.5 million on the project. The casino donated a portion of its profits to the Foundations of EastChicago. Foundational used the money to support local churches, schools and nonprofit organizations. The foundation has given out more than $16 million to local organizations since 1997, including $1.2 million for scholarships. iGC report: Showboats made more $84,000 in donations and contributions to more more 170 organizations in first one year of operation.
