‘Unlucky’ Kent County man wins $538K lottery prize in second-chance drawing
LANSING, MI -- A Kent County man though someone was trying to scam him after he received a call informing him he’d won a $538,958 prize in the Michigan Lottery’s Monthly Jackpot Progressive drawing.
“I knew I was earning entries when playing the Monthly Jackpot Progressive games, but I am not a lucky person, so I never thought I would win,” said the 60-year-old player who chose to remain anonymous. “I got a call from the Lottery one day telling me I’d won a $538,958 Monthly Jackpot Progressive prize, and I was skeptical because I thought it was a scam call.
“When I got off the phone with the Lottery employee, I saw I also had an email regarding the prize, and that’s when I knew it was real. I was extremely excited and shared the news with everyone I know!”
The winner won the prize by earning entries into the drawing from the time he spent playing eligible Monthly Jackpot games on the Michigan Lottery website. Players earn one entry for ever .50 cents they wager on qualifying games. The latest drawing for the prize took place on May 10.
The winner visited Lottery headquarters in Lansing recently to claim his prize. With his winnings, he plans on paying off his house and saving the remainder.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Wolverine FLL lottery club which claimed a $1.05 billion jackpot in March 2021. With their winnings, the group plans to give back to the community.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Warren in 2021 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
