The Star Sydney Casino Closes Over COVID-19 Lockdown
The Star Sydney casino resort has suspended all operations for at least a week because of new COVID-19 restrictions in the region. The restrictions were put into place on Friday to counter rising virus cases. Case numbers had risen to 65 by Friday morning. Four local government areas in NSW, including the City of Sydney, went into lockdown at 11:59pm on Thursday.
The Star Sydney has been subject to four sets of restrictions since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. The last set of closures was at Christmas time following a small outbreak of virus cases. There will be an increase in inspections to ensure compliance with the latest restrictions. Liquor and Gaming NSW has carried out more than 200 inspections over the last couple of months on hospitality venues.
The Star Sydney Casino has been closed down due to anti-money laundering issues. The matter is now in the hands of the Australian Financial Intelligence Agency. The Star Entertainment proposed an AU$9bn (US$6.83bn) takeover of Crown Resorts.
