Southern Pines man wants to buy house after $757,128 lottery win
Southern Pines, N.C. — A Southern Pines man is eyeing home ownership after winning big in the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Phillip Williams said he wants to buy a house after a $1 Cash 5 ticket won him the $757,128 jackpot in last week's drawing.
Williams, 43, bought the winning ticket from the Speedway on U.S. 15-501 in Carthage.
He revealed his secret for picking the winning numbers.
“I’ve been replaying my family’s birthdates for my numbers,” Williams said. “And the final number is my age.”
He initially didn't realize what had happened. After taxes, Williams took home $537,638.
“I thought I won a dollar,” Williams said, laughing. “I didn’t realize I won the jackpot until I saw the numbers online.”
Monday’s jackpot is $206,000. The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598.
