When Randy Morton was working in his uncle’s small Peterborough hotel back in the 1970s he had no idea the journey he was going to be on and continues to take.

Last month the Peterborough native was named president of a multi-billion dollar hotel/casino complex in Las Vegas, a place he is no stranger to and has lived for more than 20 years.

Morton worked his way up after graduating from George Brown College in Toronto through various hotels around in Toronto, Hawaii, California to eventually joining one of Vegas’s largest hotel’s, the Bellagio, where he spent 20 years and became CEO until leaving for the Foley Group a year ago.

He has now joined the Oak View Group (OVG), a global development and investment organization, as president of its Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

He joins former Las Vegas Raiders football team president Marc Badain who has also been selected by OVG to be president of its Las Vegas Sports and Entertainment Venues.

They will oversee the building of an NBA arena and resort in downtown Vegas for the Joint Venture which OVG is the managing partner.

“Our Las Vegas project represents a critical first step for OVG in seamlessly integrating the greatest in new and innovative hotel and casino offerings with the best in-arena development and live entertainment,” said Tim Leiweke, chair and CEO of OVG in a release.

“This unprecedented project is an industry game-changer, but to do it right means putting the best team in place.”

Morton was born and raised in Peterborough and married a Peterborough woman, Susan (Turner) Chaisson.

He said as soon he heard about the project from Leiweke he was “thrilled to join the team.”

“As soon as Tim shared his vision for the Las Vegas luxury boutique hotel and casino with me, not only did I know it was going to be big, but I knew I wanted to be involved.”

The new project is being hailed as a “state-of-the-art privately financed sports and entertainment arena that will set a new global standard for events in Las Vegas.”

To be built on Las Vegas Boulevard it will feature an 850,000-square-foot arena, a casino, hotel and an additional entertainment venue amphitheatre on 25 acres in a 66-acre plot.

Construction on the $3-billion project is expected next year and take at least three years to complete.
