Centre pleads in court for steps to prohibit online gambling websites.

Delhi High Court is hearing a petition to ban online gambling websites. The Centre says that the issue is a State subject and the states have to make laws to regulate such activities.

The Centre has asked the court to take appropriate steps to ban or prohibit online gambling websites from operating in the country. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is powerless to regulate online games. Avinash Mehrotra's petition claims that despite laws enacted by various States, a large number of websites providing gambling, betting and wagering games are still accessible in India.

The Centre claims that the MeitY cannot be expected to traverse law or legislative mandate and block online gambling websites. The petition claims the online gaming system in India is unregulated and it is a great place for carrying out hawala operations, laundering money, etc.
