Eloor, a small island on the Periyar River in southern India, used to have rich farmland and be teeming with fish. Now, a stench of putrid flesh permeates the air and most of the fish are gone. Residents say that is because of some 300 chemical companies operating in the area. The state Pollution Control Board has downplayed the industrial pollution in the Periyar River, blaming it on sewage from homes, commercial institutions and markets upstream. But residents, who long ago stopped eating the fish, say there is no doubt about the cause of the pollution and are trying to get authorities to crack down on companies dumping waste in the river.

Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux joined an illustrious group Monday night with a pair of goals and an assist in a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes to reach 1,000 career NHL points. Giroux became the 96th player to achieve the milestone. The 35-year-old entered the game needing two points to hit the momentous marker and took less than one period to make it happen. Giroux picked up point 999 with his 33rd goal of the season just after the five-minute mark and number 1,000 came on an assist when he set up Tim Stutzle with under three minutes remaining in the period.

A 62-year-old woman has been convicted of discrimination and harassment on for making racist comments about Colombia’s first Black vice president during an antigovernment protest last year. Luz Fabiola Rubiano pleaded guilty to the charges and will be sentenced by the judge on May 30. In Colombia, acts of discrimination are punishable with up to three years in prison, though judges can replace prison time with parole or house arrest. The small business owner from Bogota went viral in September after she railed against Vice President Francia Márquez on a video published by a local news site. Rubiano was protesting in front of Colombia’s congress.
Al Jaffee, the iconoclastic cartoonist who created Mad Magazine's most enduring feature — the Fold-In — and served as the publication's longest-running contributor, died at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 102.

Pavelski, playing in his 1,248th game, became the 10th American-born player to reach the milestone when he tipped Miro Heiskanen’s shot from the point. The Stars, who have won four straight, tied idle Colorado for the Central Division lead with two games remaining. Jason Robertson supplied a goal and two assists. Esa Lindell, Ty Dellandrea and Jamie Benn also scored for the Stars.
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy attended a rally in southern New Mexico on Monday for former U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell as the GOP tries to flip a congressional swing seat back to GOP control in 2024. Herrell lost her 2022 reelection bid to Democratic Congressman Gabe Vasquez in the majority-Hispanic district along the U.S. border with Mexico. The state’s Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces was the backdrop for Herrell’s announcement that she will seek the Republican nomination again. Republicans have nominated Herrell on three previous occasions. The GOP is challenging the new outline of the 2nd District in proceedings before the state Supreme Court.
