New casino proposed for Fashion Show mall on Las Vegas Strip

A new entertainment division of Howard Hughes Holdings could develop a new casino on the Las Vegas Strip — one that would rise above Fashion Show mall.
The spinoff division for the Houston-based company, Seaport Entertainment, will take over entertainment operations of the company, which includes an 80 percent interest in the air rights above Fashion Show mall where a casino is being planned, according to a news release.
Clark County spokesperson Erik Pappa said the county has not received a proposal for the casino project.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said in an email that the government agency hasn’t conducted any aeronautical studies related to the Fashion Show property, but it did conduct two studies on the block north of Fashion Show — across the street — and found a building up to 640 feet could be constructed without disturbing aviation operations.
Under federal law, developers must give the FAA the opportunity to evaluate proposed structures near airports to determine if their height could pose a hazard to aircraft or interfere with navigation aids. Based on the law, though, Clark County could technically issue a building permit for a taller building.
Howard Hughes Holdings declined to comment further on plans for the casino, including its size and timeline. Fashion Show, which is owned by Brookfield Properties, also declined to comment. The Nevada Gaming Control Board couldn’t be reached for comment.
Howard Hughes’ new division also will control operations of the Las Vegas Aviators Triple-A baseball team, Howard Hughes’ stake in Jean-Georges Restaurants, which has multiple locations including two in Las Vegas, and oversight of the Seaport neighborhood in New York City.
Seaport Entertainment is planned to be an independent subsidiary of Howard Hughes Holdings and spin off as a publicly traded company by the end of 2024, according to the news release.
Affiliated company, Howard Hughes Corp., is the developer of the master-planned community Summerlin in west Las Vegas.
“The planned separation of Seaport Entertainment from Howard Hughes will refine the identity of HHH as a pure-play real estate company focused solely on its portfolio of acclaimed master-planned communities,” the news release stated.
Former MGM Resorts International executive Anton Nikodemus will serve as CEO of Seaport Entertainment. Nikodemus most recently served as the president and COO of CityCenter for MGM Resorts where he oversaw operations for The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Vdara and the Aria as well as the development of MGM Resort’s National Harbor Hotel in Maryland and MGM Springfield in Massachusetts.
