Macau Casinos Seek $16.8m in Damages in Tak Chun Trial. Former chairman of Tak Chun Group Levo Chan is on trial. MGM China, SJM Resorts, The Venetian Macau and the Wynn Macao are seeking damages totaling MOP$135m (US$16m). The Wynns are also seeking about Mop$48.25m, while SJm is looking for Moop$35.65m and MGM is seeking M op$3.7m. The Macaese government is also looking to recover Mpop575m from the defendants.
Chan is accused of money laundering for Tak Chun. He earns HK$300,000 per month. The prosecution claims those involved in facilitating the illegal betting made at least HK $1.5bn over a six-year period. Total chips turned over through the operation were estimated to be at at HK $35bn (US$4.4bn).
Macau authorities have cracked down on illegal gambling recently. The prosecutor in the Tak Chun case is the same one leading the legal battle against the former chairman of Suncity Group Alvin Chau.
