Lucky person wins $1.8M jackpot on Thanksgiving day drawing
COMING UP. THANKS, JACLYN. NOW, WHILE MANY PEOPLE TODAY AS THE OFFICIAL KICKOFF TO HOLIDAY SEASON TYPICALLY BLACK FRIDAY DISCOUNTS STARTED MONTHS AGO. CALEB NORWOOD IS IN OUR WASHINGTON BUREAU WITH HOW THE EXPANDING SALES ARE IMPACTING YOUR WALLET. NOW CAMPING OUT THANKSGIVING NIGHT, A MAD RUSH IN THE STORES IN EARLY MORNING HOURS FIGHTS BREAKING OUT OVER DISCOUNTED ITEMS. ALL STAPLES WHEN IT COMES TO BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING IN YEARS PAST, BLACK FRIDAY WAS AN EVENT WHERE PEOPLE ENGAGED IN ALL SORTS OF RITUALS. BUT WHAT STARTED AS A ONE DAY ONLY EVENT HAS TURNED INTO MONTHS LONG DISCOUNTS WITH DEALS THIS YEAR, STARTING AS EARLY AS OCTOBER, USED TO BE THE KICKOFF TO HOLIDAY SHOPPING. AND NOW IT’S MUCH MORE AT THE HALFWAY POINT CHANGING HOW SHOPPERS FIND THOSE BARGAINS. I THINK CONSUMERS ARE BEING OVERWHELMED WITH JUST A SEA OF DISCOUNTS AND IT BECOMES DIFFICULT TO REALLY PINPOINT WHETHER BLACK FRIDAY OR PERHAPS CYBER MONDAY OFFER THE BEST DEALS. RETAILERS ARE ALSO TRYING FIGURE OUT HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS NEW SHOPPING LANDSCAPE. I THINK IT’S CHALLENGING THEM TO BE VERY CREATIVE IN HOW THEY EXTEND THEIR DISCOUNTS AND HOW THEY MARKET. THE RETAILERS ARE OFTEN KIND OF SWITCHING UP THEIR DEALS. THE NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION SAYS 60% OF PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY STARTED THEIR HOLIDAY SHOPPING AND WITH INFLATION STILL HIGH, CONSUMERS MAY ACTUALLY BENEFIT FROM THE EXTENDED DISCOUNT IT ALLOWS CONSUMERS TO SPREAD OUT THEIR SPENDING, WHICH NOT NECESSARILY A BAD THING. AND WHILE ONLINE SHOPPING HAS CHANGED MANY SHOPPING HABITS, YOU CAN EXPECT TO STILL SEE SOME OF THOSE BLACK FRIDAY TRADITION. THERE’S STILL A LOT OF NOSTALGIA, A LOT OF FOCUS ON THIS WEEKEND WEEKEND. THAT WAS KAITLYN NORWOOD REPORTING IN A RECENT HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY POLL FOUND MORE NORTH CAROLINIANS PLAN TO SHOP ON CYBER MONDAY THAN ON BLACK FRIDAY. MORE THAN 40% OF ADULTS SURVEYED SAID THEY WOULD CLICK THEIR WAYS TO DEALS, WHILE 25% SAID THEY WOULD BRAVE THE CROWDS. SEARCH FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS AND BLACK FRIDAY DEALS COME AT A TIME WHERE INFLATION IS HURTING FAMILIES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. IT’S THE REASON EXPERTS SAY RETAILERS HAVE BEEN OFFERING DEALS EARLY THIS YEAR. YOU MAY HAVE SEEN SOME OF THEM POPPING UP ONLINE OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS. FOR BLACK FRIDAY ITSELF, THE MOST DISCOUNT HIT ITEMS THIS YEAR ARE EXPECTED TO BE LAPTOPS, TVS AND HOME APPLIANCES. EXPERTS RECOMMEND LOOKING FOR OLDER MODELS. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SAVE. WE ARE SEEING A LOT OF OVERSTOCK STILL AND RETAILERS HAVE BEEN SPENDING THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS TRYING TO SELL THROUGH THAT MERCHANDISE. I DO EXPECT TO SEE DISCOUNTS DEEPER THAN USUAL IN CATEGORIES LIKE CASUAL APPAREL, TV, TVS, FURNITURE, HOME DECOR. AND EXPERTS SUGGEST MAKING A LIST BEFORE YOU DO WHAT YO’RE SHOPPING THIS WEEKEND. THAT WAY, YOU CAN CHECK DIFFERENT STORES AND COMPARE PRICES. THEY ALSO RECOMMEND CHECKING YOUR CREDIT FOR ADDITIONAL DISCOUNTS AND OFFERS. AND THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE FIRE REPORTED OVER THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY. THIS WAS THE SCENE OF A FIRE IN SURREY COUNTY. IT WAS ON PONDEROSA PINE LANE NEAR HIGHWAY 601 IN DOBSON. OUR REPORTER ON THE SCENE SAYS IT WAS A SMALL WOODS FIRE AND A REST HAS BEEN OBTAINED FOR THE SUSPECT BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF A NORTH CAROLINA WOMAN. SHAWN COLA ROBINSON, A FORMER STUDENT AT WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY, DIED IN KABUL, MEXICO, LATE OCTOBER WHILE ON VACATION WITH FRIENDS. MEXICAN PROSECUTORS ANNOUNCED THEY HAVE FILED CHARGES AGAINST US. WOMAN BELIEVED TO BE KNOWN TO ROBINSON. THEY DID NOT NAME THE SUSPECT, BUT PROSECUTOR PROCEDURES ARE UNDERWAY TO HAVE THE WOMAN EXTRADITED FROM THE US TO FACE CHARGES. THE FBI’S FIELD OFFICE IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, HAS ALSO CONFIRMED IT HAS STARTED INVESTIGATING THE MATTER. THIS COMES AFTER A VIDEO SURFACED ONLINE SHOWING SOMEONE ATTACKING HER. BUT ACCORDING TO THE AUTOPSY, ROBINSON DIED FROM NECK AND SPINAL INJURIES. AND OVER IN ONSLOW COUNTY, A WOMAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY A DEPUTY. THE SHOOTING HAPPENED AT NEW YESTERDAY, BUT POLICE SAY THE WOMAN WAS ARMED AND SHE WAS SHOT DURING A TRAFFIC STOP. THE STATE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION IS INVESTIGATING WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED. THE DEPUTY IS ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. THE DEPUTY WAS NOT INJURED. LOOKING AHEAD, THE CITY OF WINSTON-SALEM IS ASKING RESIDENTS FOR THEIR SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE A PORTION OF NEW WALKERTOWN ROAD. THIS STRETCH IN PARTICULAR IS BETWEEN A MARTIN LUTHER KING JR AND NORTHAMPTON DRIVES. THE CITY’S DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS LOOKING FOR INPUT ON A VARIETY OF ISSUES, INCLUDING IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE ROADWAY SIGNALS AS WELL AS FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS. THE PUBLIC MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH, FROM 5 TO 7 P.M. AT THE CARL H. RUSSELL COMMUNITY CENTER AND STEPPING UP A LOCAL MAN IS SPENDING THE HOLIDAYS MAKING SURE FAMILIES IN OUR AREA DON’T HAVE TO GO WITHOUT. WHAT HIS MOTIVATION IS FOR HELPING OUT HIS COMMUNITY AND THE STRUGGLING TO COPE. TWO COMMUNITIES RAVAGED BY GUN VIOLENCE THIS WEEK ARE STILL WORKING TO RECOVER. HOW THEY’RE WORKING TO MOVE PAST THE TRAGIC. TAKING A LOOK AT THE TRAFFIC NOW HERE. THIS IS SALEM PARKWAY AT CORONA STREET. NOT TOO MUCH GOING ON THERE. THERE WAS A STRAY CAR. THEY’RE GOING PROBABLY TO GET THOSE BLACK FRIDAY DEALS. BUT LOOKING CLEAR AS OF NOW, HEADS UP FOR DRIVERS IN WINSTON-SALEM NEXT WEEK, BEGINNING NOVEMBER 29TH, THE FIRST STREET WILL OPEN TO TWO WAY TRAFFIC. IT WILL TAKE PLACE BETWEEN PETERS CREEK PARKWAY AND SPRUCE STREET. THE CHANGE WILL ALSO IMPACT SECOND STREET. THAT’S BETWEEN PETERS CREEK PARKWAY AND BROAD STREET. OTHER SECTIONS OF SECOND STREET WILL OPEN TO TWO WAY TRAFFIC ON JANUARY 1ST. FOR THE TIME BEING, ELECTRONIC MESSAGE BOARDS ARE TELLING DRIVERS ABOUT THE CHANGE. THIS IS PART OF A TWO POINT $8,000,000,000 MILLION MAKEOVER TO DOWNTOWN STREETS. THE PURPOSE IS TO SLOW TRAFFIC AND MAKE IT MORE FRIENDLY FOR
