Lotto 6/49 celebrates its 40th birthday by offering more jackpots
Lotto 6/49 turned 40 this year, and to celebrate, the game lottery players have loved for decades will now offer players a chance at two multi-million dollar jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday starting in September. Players will have the chance to win the Classic $5 million Jackpot and the growing Gold Ball Jackpot, which starts at $10 million.
Sales for the new Lotto 6/49 begin on Sunday, Sept. 11, with the first draw of the enhanced game on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
To celebrate the new Lotto 6/49, BCLC wants to give lottery players the chance to win one of 31 prize packages. There are 30 secondary prize packages of Lotto 6/49 branded merchandise and one grand prize package that includes Lotto 6/49 branded merchandise and a $649 voucher for PlayNow.com—B.C.’s only legal, regulated gambling website and the only website whose profits go back to support health care, education and community programs.
The core elements of the Lotto 6/49 remain the same, including the $3 ticket price. For the Classic Draw, players can still either select their own six numbers from 1 to 49 using a selection slip or play with Quick Pick. The Classic Draw will offer a jackpot that is always set at $5 million, and the odds of winning any prize amount remain the same, at 1 in 6.6. Players will still receive a unique 10-digit number with every play, and there is still a guaranteed winner every draw.
The Gold Ball Draw is a guaranteed prize draw. The winner will win either the guaranteed $1 million prize or the growing jackpot that starts at $10 million. If not won, the jackpot will increase by $2 million every draw and can grow to more than $60 million.
The odds of the Gold Ball being drawn improve with every draw, until the Gold Ball Jackpot is won.
Players can still add the Extra and BC/49 for $1 each and can still play advance play.
A Look Back at Lotto 6/49
Launched in June 1982, Lotto 6/49 was the first Canada-wide “pick your own numbers” lottery game, with a first draw jackpot of $500,000. Since then, Lotto 6/49 has generated more than $66 billion in sales and delivered more than $33 billion in prizes across Canada. From smaller prizes to the largest jackpots, there have been more than 1.6 billion winners across Canada over the game’s four decades.
So far in 2022, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $89 million in winnings from Lotto 6/49.
Funds generated through lottery tickets like Lotto 6/49—as well as other BCLC lottery, casino and sports-betting products—go back to the Province of B.C. to support education, health care and community programs. In fact, thanks to players, BCLC has delivered more than $26 billion in net income to the Province of B.C. since 1985.
Players can purchase tickets at lottery retailers or at PlayNow.com. Winning numbers and group release forms can be found online at www.bclc.com. Players can now check their lottery tickets anytime, anywhere on iOS and Android devices on the BCLC Lotto! app.
