Las Vegas Casinos Being Demolished

It is the end of an era as the once popular Texas Station Hotel & Casino on Rancho Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard in North Las Vegas, and the Fiesta Henderson Hotel & Casino on Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson are currently being demolished.

According to KSNV Channel 3 News, these are just two of four casinos that Red Rock Properties (StationCasinos’ parent company) will be demolishing in the coming months. The other two are Wild Wild West on West Tropicana just off the Strip, and Fiesta Rancho on Rancho Drive at Lake Mead Boulevard. They also say three of the four properties will be sold off, while they will redevelop the Wild Wild West site. The company is currently in the process of building Durango Resort & Casino in the southwest part of the Las Vegas valley.

The fact that Fiesta Rancho is also going to be demolished and the land sold is especially concerning to me and my hockey teammates. We have been playing ice hockey at the Pepsi Ice Arena, located at Fiesta Rancho, for the past seventeen years. We know the hotel and casino have been shut down since the Covid-19 pandemic hit in the spring of 2020, but the ice arena opened back up for us when restrictions were lifted.

Not only does the Pepsi Ice Arena offer recreational ice hockey leagues to the community, but they are also open for public skating and special events. With the popularity of hockey increasing so much since the arrival of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, it would be a real shame to see one of the local ice hockey arenas close down. All those teams and players would have to find a spot in one of the other leagues at Las Vegas Ice Center on Flamingo, City National Arena in Summerlin, or the new Lifeguard Arena on Water Street in Henderson.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed in hopes that someone else buys the Pepsi Ice Arena and keeps it open for the community.
