Iconic Las Vegas Casino Tropicana Announces Closure Date Ahead Of Planned Demolition

LAS VEGAS (CelebrityAccess) – The final days of the Tropicana are now underway as its owner, Bally’s Corporation, has announced the cessation of operations on April 2, just before its 67th anniversary, in preparation for the demolition of the iconic Las Vegas casino to make room for a new professional baseball stadium.
The familiar sounds of slot machines on the casino floor will fall silent, marking the end of an era. Bally’s Corporation shared this development on Monday (January 29), expressing optimism about the forthcoming transformation. The press release indicates that a “state-of-the-art integrated resort and ballpark” will replace the Tropicana – to the tune of $1.5 billion.
Bally’s President George Papanier conveyed excitement about this new chapter, emphasizing their honor in partnering with the Athletics to bring a Major League ballpark to Las Vegas. “This is an exciting next chapter for Bally’s, and we are honored to be a key partner with the Athletics on bringing a Major League ballpark to the great city of Las Vegas.” However, the exact timeline for the commencement of demolition post-closure remains undisclosed.
Approximately 500 workers, primarily affiliated with the Culinary Union, will be affected by the closure. Workers staying until the final day of operations will receive a severance package of $2,000 per service year, along with six months of complimentary health care. Alternatively, those opting not to take the severance package will receive compensation of up to $15,000 and an opportunity to work at the new property. Despite being owned by Bally’s, the Tropicana operates under the DoubleTree by Hilton brand.
2024 marks the final year the Oakland A’s will play at the Oakland Coliseum, with MLB approving their move to Las Vegas in November. After the relocation, Oakland will no longer host any professional sports teams. The new Las Vegas ballpark, boasting a seating capacity of 30,000, is slated to open in 2028. However, the location for the A’s games during the 2025-27 seasons remains unknown.
The Tropicana, opening its doors on April 4, 1957, held the title of the most expensive casino ever built in Las Vegas, costing $15 million. Despite its imminent closure, the Tropicana remains embedded in the city’s history as an iconic and high-end destination frequented by major stars over the years.
