Here's what we know about new Phoenix-area casino Santan Mountain
PHOENIX – Gila River Hotels & Casinos is betting on No. 4.
The Gila River Indian Community’s gaming enterprise held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its fourth metro Phoenix venue and unveiled the project’s name: Santan Mountain.
“Not only will Santan Mountain bring additional revenue, sustainability and critical services to our community members, it will elevate our prestige in the gaming and hospitality industry as we continue to craft an entertainment dynasty,” tribal Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis said in a press release.
Construction at the southeast corner of Gilbert Road and Hunt Highway, south of Chandler, is expected to take 18 to 24 months. The project will create an estimated 650 jobs.
Santan Mountain will feature a BetMGM sports book, more than 800 slot machines and a high-stakes gaming salon.
The casino will also have mini baccarat, craps and roulette tables, which, along with sports betting, are now permitted under the state’s updated gaming compact.
The venue will offer multiple dining options and a bar featuring entertainment on the casino floor. It’s possible a hotel will be added in the future, too.
Gila River’s current lineup consists of Wild Horse Pass and Lone Butte in the East Valley and Vee Quiva in the West Valley.
Wild Horse Pass, which is about 15 miles northwest of Santan Mountain, is planning to open a $143 million expansion later this year featuring a new 11-story tower, a rooftop restaurant, two pools and 205 guest rooms.
