Groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday for the Queen of Terre Haute Casino Resort. The venue should be up and running in 18 months. It will offer 500 jobs during construction. As many as 1,000 people will work on the venue. Churchill Downs Inc. plans to spend $260 million to create a casino with 1.000 slots and 50 table games. There will also be a 10-story luxury hotel and five restaurants and bars.
The idea of a casino in Terre Haute has been discussed for almost 40 years. The Indiana General Assembly approved a bill in 2019 that brought the casino to life. It is expected to bring $190 million to the city and county annually.
