Governor signs Polistina’s bill extending online gambling

TRENTON – New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Friday signed a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senators Vince Polistina (R-02) James Beach (D-06) that the extends online gambling through 2028.
Polistina said the legislation will keep New Jersey at the forefront of an evolving gambling industry by supporting casinos’ application of online gaming.
“The legalization of online gambling and sports betting was a catalyst for struggling casinos in the aftermath of the Great Recession,” Polistina said in a release. “In places like Atlantic City, internet gaming has created a number of good paying jobs after the Great Recession and has generated millions of dollars in tax revenues for the state.”
The authorization ensures stability in the gambling industry, he said.
Online casino gambling was legalized in 2013 and authorized for a 10-year period, which is set to expire in November. In the 10 years since its legalization, online gambling has contributed to significant economic growth, job creation, and the enjoyment of responsible gambling by New Jersey residents and tourists.
Senate Bill S-3075 amends the existing authorization and extends it for an additional five-year period, ending in 2028.
“Internet gaming revitalized New Jersey’s casinos and was a strong economic driver for the industry during the pandemic,” Polistina said. “This extension supports the integral role that the internet plays in shaping the current and future success of casinos in New Jersey.”
