Filipino Lawmaker Warns Online Cockfighting, Gambling Are Country's New Pandemic
Alan Peter Cayetano is an ex-House Speaker from the Philippines. He is currently looking for a seat in the Senate. On Monday, he asked Congress to reject the applications for 25-year legislative franchises requested by two different e-sabong companies in Philippines, following Deputy Speaker Eddie Villanueva's last week's attempt.
Cayetano has warned against online gambling and online cockfighting. He believes the government is trying to push the "pandemic" through The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation. The Catholic Church supports Cayetanao's efforts. Bishop Alberto Uy of the Diocese of Tagbilaran feared e-sabong would turn families apart, corrupt members of society, and “incite crimes”.
Sabong is a national sport in the Philippines. The industry is worth a billion dollars. Online Sabong betting has grown since the Coronavirus pandemic. Lawmaker warned that online gambling is the new pandemics.
