As Responsible Gambling Awareness Week begins today, the State Government is urging Western Australians to recognise the warning signs before gambling becomes a problem.

Since 2006, Responsible Gambling Awareness Week has been recognised across the country.

It is designed to promote responsible gambling and highlight the support services available for those affected by gambling.

Some of the warning signs that indicate gambling has become a problem can include: borrowing money to gamble, hiding the extent of your gambling debt or arguing with friends and family about gambling.

The State Government funds the 24/7 Problem Gambling Helpline, online counselling and face-to-face counselling services for those experiencing problems with gambling.

Anyone concerned about their gambling is urged to seek support by calling the Problem Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 or by visiting the Gamble Aware website.

"Responsible gambling starts with recognising the warning signs before they become a problem.

"If you're having to borrow money or use excuses to cover your gambling debts, chances are things are starting to spiral out of control and help is available.

"The State Government and industry fund a number of initiatives to assist people whose gambling behaviour is impacting their finances, mental health or relationships.

"We encourage anyone in need to make use of these services, including family and friends of loved ones experiencing gambling harm."
