Culinary Union reaches agreement with TI Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Culinary Union announced a tentative agreement on a new five-year contract for a resort on the Strip days before the strike deadline.
The agreement took place on Tuesday night for over 1,000 hospitality workers at the TI Las Vegas.
However, there are still 14 more casino resorts in limbo, seeking new contracts before a Friday 5 a.m. strike deadline, and those still waiting are concerned that time is running out with the Super Bowl less than two weeks away.
Ralph Mciver has been a Cook at Top of Binion’s Steakhouse in downtown Las Vegas for over two decades. Mciver shared with 8 News Now that he works two jobs just to make ends meet. He wants to make the same as those who were able to negotiate on the Strip.
“I know we are not as big as the strip casinos, but there is still plenty of business and profit and we work just as hard as the casinos on the strip, so we deserve just as much as they deserve,” he shared.
Currently, negotiations are ongoing with 14 casino resorts, some of which include, Sahara Las Vegas, Virgin Hotel Las Vegas, Binion’s, Circa, Four Queens, and several others.
Mario Sandoval who also works at Binion’s said he’s thankful for the union’s help in all of this and adds that in his decades in the industry, this is by far the hardest it’s been for him and his colleagues.
“The hotels are doing good, everyone is making money and we just want a part of that,” he said. “I have had other employees ask me where they can go for assistance to pay their rent because they aren’t making enough on their paychecks. That’s a problem.”
Negotiations continue with 14 remaining Strip Independent and Downtown Las Vegas casino properties for approximately 2,900 workers ahead of the Feb. 2 at 5 a.m. deadline.
