Crown Sydney: Casino advertises for gaming staff as it prepares for conditional licence at Barangaroo
Crown Resorts has started advertising for gaming table staff for its Sydney casino in preparation for the state government signing off on a strict conditional licence for the gambling giant.
The NSW cabinet is expected to consider an agreement between the NSW gaming regulator and Crown as early as Monday to allow it to open its Barangaroo casino under tight operating rules.
The proposed licence is expected to be initially for a two-year period and the agreement would also give Crown suitor Blackstone the green light to acquire the business.
Minister for Hospitality and Racing Kevin Anderson was contacted for comment.
A Crown spokeswoman said they continue “to work closely with [the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority] and welcomes any decision allowing gaming to commence in Sydney. We will provide an update when appropriate.”
Crown’s casino licence for Barangaroo was suspended in late 2020 amid the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority’s damning public inquiry into its operations, which found Crown was unfit to operate.
The inquiry’s report, released in February last year, found Crown needed a management overhaul if it ever wanted to hold a casino licence, and the state’s gambling regulator should reconsider James Packer’s involvement.
It said that it was obvious that Packer, as a 36 per cent shareholder in Crown, exercised the “real power” which had “disastrous consequences for the company”.
It also called on NSW to establish the Independent Casino Commission, a “dedicated, stand-alone, specialist casino regulator with the necessary framework to meet the extant and emerging risks for gaming and casinos”.
