Cork TD launches legislation to ban the use of credit cards for gambling online and in bookies
Cork TD Thomas Gould has proposed legislation to totally ban the use of credit cards for gambling online and in bookies across Ireland.
He says that we need to "put protections in place and make sure that people aren't gambling with money they don't have."
The bill proposes that under the 1931 Betting Act, "no license shall be issued by the Revenue Commissioners under that act unless the applicant for the license have given them an undertaking not to accept bets or otherwise deal in bets that involve the use either directly or indirectly of a credit card."
TD Gould argues that this legislation with protect "vulnerable", which should be "at the fore of gambling regulation."
“While Fine Gael have left legislation gathering dust since 2013, Sinn Féin are taking positive steps forward to finally regulate gambling and protect those at risk of, or in active, addiction," he argues.
Major players in this industry have already outlined that they will not be accepting the use of credit cards for placing bets, many bookmakers have introduced a ban during live sports and the National Lottery have supported this action.
“We need to make sure that those in the throes of addiction aren’t gambling with money they don’t have and can’t afford.
“For too long now, the attitude from various governments to gambling regulation has been a shrug of the shoulders," Thomas Gould put forward, as he urged all parties and TD's to support this bill.
