Connecticut website allows self-exclusion from gambling

Connecticut has launched a new online portal to allow people to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling.
Available on the state’s official website, people can choose to be added to Connecticut’s Gaming Self-Exclusion List for one year, five years, or for life, with names to remain on the list unless requested to be removed.
The website, which is already active, comes ahead of the legalisation of sports betting in the state on 7 October 2021, both online and land-based. The two tribal casinos - Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun - and ten Sportech locations are all preparing for legalised sports betting next month.
“While this may be a form of entertainment many people can enjoy, for others it can be a harmful addiction,” said Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle Seagull. “The ability to voluntarily exclude yourself from these activities is one of the many tools available to help.”
Gambling licensees may ban individuals on the list from both land-based properties and online gambling sites, with the website warning that those on the list could forfeit any rewards points they may have earned within and outside of the state.
“In the problem gambling community, self-exclusion is an essential step in helping people who are addicted,” said Diana Goode, Executive Director of the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling. “By creating a barrier from participating, it allows those in recovery a much-needed respite from triggers and reduces the likelihood of relapse.”
