Tucson’s best tailgate cooks to compete for title and prizes at University of Arizona’s home football games

Calling all Tucson tailgate cooks — Casino Del Sol is looking for the best of you to compete in the upcoming Sol Bowl Tailgate Championship.

Imagine this: Casino Del Sol’s executive chef, Ryan Clark is deep in the midst of some tailgating all on his own. Suddenly, the idea dawned on him to invite tailgaters from around town to battle it out from behind the grill. Fast forward to now as we announce his vision made manifest.

How to compete

This weekly competition will take place at each of the first six home games at Arizona Stadium. Those who believe they’re worthy of such a championship title may submit burger recipes now through Friday, August 12.

Each week prior to the home game, chef Ryan Clark will choose a winning recipe from the submissions, recreate it himself, and showcase it with an in-game presentation via the jumbotron.

“I can’t wait for this year’s Sol Bowl Tailgate Championship,” said Clark. “Each year we see so many creative and unique recipes.”

What you’ll win

Winners will be named the weekly Sol Bowl Tailgate Champion, awarded an official Sol Bowl chef’s apron from Chef Works, $350 in gift cards from Casino Del Sol and local food purveyors, and then entered to win the grand prize. What’s the grand prize, you ask? Well, it’s a Kamado Joe Charcoal Grill and an invitation to attend the home game on Friday, November 25 when the University of Arizona goes head-to-head with Arizona State.

That game will also set the stage for the competition’s grand finale, which will include an on-field presentation where the grand prize winner will be announced live and crowned the 2022 Sol Bowl Tailgate Champion.

“It’s so much fun to see what people come up with, and there’s no better way to celebrate the kickoff of the football season than with all three,” said Clark. “I am excited to see what the fans come up with this year.”

Tailgate cooks are encouraged to submit entries online now through Friday, August 12. Entrants must be 21 years or older and need to submit an original tailgate burger recipe, use a charcoal grill, and the recipe must serve four people.

May the finest tailgate cook in Tucson prevail.
