Canada: Unifor Casino Members Ready for Strike
Nearly 2,000 workers from eight Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC) casinos represented by a union may go on strike if they don't see agreements negotiated by this Friday.
Unifor in Canada is negotiating better conditions for employees working at eight casinos a part of GCGC. The benefits which Unifar seeks to negotiate include prioritizing wages and pensions. UnIFor represents some 315,000 workers from different lines of work. Unfor Local 504 represents 275 workers at Elements Casino Mohawk and 300 workers in Elements Casinos Brantford and Flamboro.
Unifor's bargaining tables are prioritizing wages, benefits and pensions for Unifors working at table games, slots, security, cashiering, food and beverage, kitchen and culinary, guest services, housekeeping, and maintenance.
Corey Dalton, the president of Unifor Local 1090, believes that good wages and benefits for casino workers translates directly into job satisfaction. Lana Payne, national secretary-treasurer for UnIFor, says the union's goal is to help employees that contribute to the success of the casinos.
The union wants to share some of the gains made by the casino employers with the workers who make them successful.
