Boyd Gaming Sues Kansas for Damages, Asks for $25M
Boyd Gaming has decided to file a lawsuit against Kansas. The operator claims that with the newly-introduced sports betting regulation, the state is in direct violation of the contract that it signed with Boyd. According to the agreement, if Kansas introduces slot games similar to those at Kansas Star Casino, it will have to pay a $25 million fee to Boyd Gaming.
Boyd operates Kansas Star Casino in the vicinity of the Wichita Greyhound Park. The new law allows for horse racing machines to be operated there. Phil Ruffin, the owner of Treasure Island, is considering selling the racetrack. Boyd claims that the horse-racing machines are similar to slot machines. If Kansas offers external games similar in nature to the ones offered by Boyd, it will have to pay a $25 million fee.
Boyd Gaming is suing Kansas for $25 million. Ruffin Companies is not surprised by the decision. The company claims that the lawsuit is absurd and is an ironic tool to get a refund. The lawsuit also doesn't make sense as HHRMs and slot machines are different.
