Both Niagara Falls casinos are shut down after midnight tonight

If Niagara Falls residents or tourists were hoping maybe playing the slots or some casino table games would take their mind off all the new COVID-19 restrictions, they are out of luck.
The new restrictions limit smaller facilities to 50 per cent capacity but when it comes to the larger ones, such as the Niagara Falls Convention Centre or the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, the new (old) rules are 50 per cent or 1,000 people, whichever is less.
That means for Niagara Falls two casinos – Casino Niagara and Fallsview Casino and Resort – the limits are 1,000 people tops.
While they are owned by the Ontario government, the two casinos are operated by Connecticut-based Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment and the new restrictions were enough to shut them both down for the times being.
As of Wednesday, January 5 at 12:01 am. Richard Taylor, the President of Niagara Casinos, announced yesterday (December 3) that both were shutting down.
He added his group was working with the OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming), notifying that governing body of the shutdown.
He added further updates on when the casino will re-open, taking into account guidance from public health authorities, will be available in the coming weeks.
What remains to be seen is if the large amount of shows Fallsview had scheduled for February and March will be postponed and rescheduled.
